"The History Of The LSU Tigers"LSU has a long and proud tradition, and that great tradition has always been followed with the LSU tigers (Mike). As the mascot of LSU, Mike's history dates back to 1936, and lives through to today with Mike VI. The first of the LSU Tigers was Mike I. Mike I was the LSU mascot from 1936 until 1956. LSU bought him from a zoo in Little Rock Arkansas. Guess how they got enough money to buy him? The school actually collected a quarter from every student. An interesting fact about the first of the LSU tigers is that he was actually kidnapped by some stupid Tulane fans in the 1950's. The Tulane jerks painted Mike and his cage green, and abandoned him in the hood (New Orleans). The first of the LSU tigers died from a kidney disease in 1956, but he did make it for 20 years as the LSU mascot! The second of the LSU Tigers was (of course) Mike II. Mike II only served from 1956 until 1958. LSU got this tiger from the Audobon Zoo in New Orleans. Mike II died because of a broken leg. The third of the LSU Tigers was (surprise) Mike III. Mike III had a long life as the LSU mascot from 1958 until 1976. This LSU tiger was bought from the Seattle Zoo, and he came just in time to be the LSU mascot for the championship game in 1958. The only losing season of Mike III's rule was 1976, the same year that he died from pneumonia. The fourth of the LSU Tigers was (drumroll please) Mike IV. This LSU tiger made it from 1976 until 1990. The Busch family donated him to LSU from their Busch Gardens in Florida. In 1981 some idiots played a joke by cutting the locks that kept him in his cage at LSU. Mike IV was found in the track stadium, doped up, and brought back to his cage. Mike IV got to retire in the Baton Rouge zoo in 1990, and he lived until 1995 in the zoo. Mike V reigned at LSU from 1990 until 2007. He was donated by a zooligical park in Alabama. During his reign, Mike got a great new habitat to live in at LSU. Mike V was the mascot during LSU's national championship of 2003. He finally passed away in 2007 from renal failure. The current, and best of the LSU Tigers, mascot of LSU is Mike VI. He was donated by a large cats rescue faciliy in Indiana. He is a Siberian-Bengal mix, and the tiger weighs over 300 pounds! Some vets think that he will eventually weigh over 700 pounds!!! My prediction is that Mike VI will live as the LSU mascot for at least twenty more years, just like LSU Coach Les Miles! GEAUX LSU TIGERS |
